BJS Strategic Partner
BJS and BJS Open are published on behalf of the BJS Foundation Limited by Oxford University Press. The Journals’ influence and standing have grown over the years through the ownership of its registered charity, the BJS Foundation. The Foundation’s objectives are to advance and improve education in surgery and to diffuse knowledge on new and improved methods of teaching and practising surgery in all its branches. It does this primarily through the promotion of the Journals, but it has also developed international strategic partnerships. The BJS Council of Management is drawn mainly from these partner organizations whose relationship has increased the Journals’ profile and broadened its attraction globally. The Council is proud of the quality of the Journals, the content of which is further enhanced by a hands-on approach by its editorial team in improving submitted manuscripts and the journal content.
The BJS Academy is an open access online educational resource for current and future surgeons. The Academy is comprised of five distinct sections: Continuing surgical education, Young BJS, Cutting Edge, Scientific surgery and Surgical news.
The Surgical Infection Society Europe is a strategic partner of the BJS Foundation. The partnership provides many benefits to the organisation and to our membership.
BJS Institute ‘How to Write a Manuscript’ Course
September 2026 Application
To streamline the process and ensure all applicants meet eligibility criteria, BJS Academy are implementing a pre-check of supporting documentation. Applicants will be required to submit the necessary documentation prior to starting their application. This will allow us to address any concerns early and confirm eligibility.
Key Checklist for Submission
Time Commitment:
Be able to set aside a minimum of 15 hours per week between 21 September and 3 November 2026 (total of 100 hours) to complete all learning activities and assessment. The nominee is required to engage with learning activities on a regular basis throughout each week that the course runs. Failure to engage with learning activities and assessment to a satisfactory level may result in the nominee failing, or being withdrawn, from the course.
Qualifications:
Hold an accredited medical degree (MBChB or equivalent) or a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent, in a subject related to healthcare, medical writing or publishing.
English Language Requirements:
As all teaching is in English, nominees must be able to prove that their English language abilities are at a high enough level to study at a postgraduate degree level. Nominees need to meet English language requirements with one of the following: being a national of a majority English-speaking country; an English language test that is no more than two years old; a degree (no more than five years old) that was taught and assessed in English; certain professional qualifications. It is essential that nominees check the University of Edinburgh English language requirements here before submitting an application.
Application Start Deadline:
Nominees must begin their application no later than Monday 4 May. Failure to meet this deadline will result in forfeiting their place in the September course.
